Updating Average Annual Rainfall for Sarasota Bay

Keeping track of annual average rainfall is important for watershed management. The following video tutorial shows a quick process for updating a graphical representation of average annual rainfall using a bar-graph that compares average annual rainfall to the historic rainfall. Average annual rainfall for Sarasota bay is calculated by combining the daily values from approximately 17 different automated rainfall collection sites. The combined values are totaled yielding a monthly value in inches. These monthly averages are then tabulated on a separate sheet in excel. The monthly averages are then presented graphically using a bar graph with the historical annual average behind the current year average. The following video is an example of how to update the bar graphs with the current years data in a quick manner. These graphs are a quick visual representation to let management know what how the current years data compares to the long term average on a month-to-month basis.
